Climate Systems

Climate systems organize themselves in large scale patterns and these different patterns change during the transition from summer to winter. This pattern can be seen as an emergent system as the random movement of the high and low pressure systems creates a pattern that can be seen across the globe. This system can lead to other systems that present the emergence theory such as hurricanes.

One response to “Climate Systems

  1. Really great explanation of an emergent system through the incorporation of a concrete example.

One nitpicky comment/edit: in such systems, patterns don’t emerge at random / as a result of randomness. Emergence is the evolution of complex behavior through a simple (or not) set of governing rules / conditions. In your example, the characteristics of a climate emerge from the mechanics of heat transfer, the forces governing the interaction of gas particles, etc.
